Do you need to be an electrician to test and tag?
Many people believe that, because it involves ‘working with electricity’, testing and tagging must be completed by an electrician – that’s not the case, though.
Electricians can do testing and tagging, though they may not have the specialised test and tag equipment requried, to meet the requirements set out in the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760-2022. However, you do not need to be an electrician to test and tag.
Anyone who wishes to do testing and tagging can do so by completing a test and tag course.
So… who can do testing and tagging?
As set out in the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760-2022, test and tag services must be completed by a competent person, which is defined as someone who has:
- The required experience and knowledge (gained through training or practical experience)
- The ability to correctly use testing equipment
- An understanding of the dangers associated with electricity, and
- Knowledge of the Australian Standard and other State / Territory legislative requirements.
As such, anyone who wishes to do testing and tagging can do so by completing a test and tag course.
What does test and tag training involve?
Generally, test and tag courses are via a one day face-to-face training session. They are usually made up of a couple of units (like testing and tagging, and OH&S) and can be delivered in conjunction with other relevant courses (like plug top replacement).
As the majority of participants are from a corporate background – they are usually members of a health and safety team or committee – most test and tag courses do not require specialist electrical knowledge.
